What if NYC was a Childhood City?
Giving Kids Freedom and Independence Through the Built Environment
Part of a global movement. (Several, in fact.)
Childhood City is bringing the focus of public space advocacy in New York City to that most formative of times in every one of our lives: childhood. We aim to bring the needs and voices of children into the decision making process and influence the built environment to support childhood independence and well being.
We’re in very good company.
Advocates around the world are increasingly recognizing society has lost the plot when it comes to the needs of children and childhood. Whether it’s social-media-induced anxiety, over-protective parenting, a lack of unstructured play, or hostile urban public spaces, kids are being systematically let down.
We believe cities, especially New York City, can play a crucial role returning to today’s kids something that past generations were afforded as-of-right: freedom and independence—the opportunity to take their place in the social life of the city.
